Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA)

Seneca Web-Based Systems to Assist in Compliance (Profitably!)

FSMA Compliance Requirements: The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) is the most sweeping change to the food safety system since the Food Drug and Cosmetic Act of 1938.

FSMA Section 103, Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventive Controls, mandates that registered food facilities implement a written preventive controls plan. This mandate involves: (1) evaluating the hazards that could affect food safety, (2) specifying what preventive steps, or controls, will be put in place to significantly minimize or prevent the hazards, (3) specifying how the facility will monitor these controls to ensure they are working, (4) maintaining routine records of the monitoring, and (5) specifying what actions the facility will take to correct problems that arise.

Systems to Assist in Compliance: In a survey of food industry risk management and QA executives, automated systems were recognized as a core component of meeting the compliance requirements of FSMA. The web-based systems provided by Seneca can assist food manufacturers in FSMA compliance in many areas, including:

  • Recall Procedures
  • Current Good Manufacturing Practices
  • Supplier Verification
  • Corrective Actions
  • Records and Recordkeeping

Seneca can also provide custom design, training and ongoing support of these systems.

Seneca's Unique (and Profitable) Approach: Systems developed and implemented solely for (hopefully!) infrequent contingencies (e.g., recall and crisis management) can be difficult to justify in terms of Return on Investment (ROI). Seneca's solutions provide a modular and integrated suite of systems that not only meet compliance requirements, but also provide day-to-day efficiencies in key operational areas. Adding modules such as Product Recall/Withdrawal Management to a suite of Seneca systems with a proven ongoing operational ROI (e.g., Product Complaint Management and Supplier Contract Compliance Management - both of which also contribute to FSMA compliance) can be accomplished with minimal incremental cost.

FSMA Food Safety Readiness Self-Assessment Program: Working in close partnership with the American Frozen Food Institute, Seneca assisted in the development of a FSMA Food Safety Readiness Self Assessment Program that has been offered to AFFI members and to all interested food industry facilities. Click here (or on the graphic below) to access the AFFI site for more information on the Self-Assessment Program.
